Known as "the rivalry", Clarkson-St. Lawrence games need no introduction to the North Country echelons of sports.

It's a best out of 3 series as Clarkson visits St. Lawrence University in first round play of the 2009-2010 ECAC playoffs and it is sure to be an emotional and competitive atmosphere at Appleton Arena.

Coach George Roll of the Golden Knights, says that a tough stretch with some key losses made the Clarkson team tougher and more determined to get healthy and play the best they can.

"It's going to be an extremely competitve and difficult series for us."

Saints Coach Joe Marsh agreed, saying that his team must be able to control the game and erase the past wins and focus on the present.

"This rivalry seems to be a great equalizer to things."

It has been a few years since former St. Lawrence University hockey center Wes Stitt laced up his skates and took to the ice against cross town rival Clarkson University.

Stitt played on an SLU team that was third in the nation in the 1955-56 season.

But, the intense rivalry between the two North Country teams was something the players and local fans always looked forward to.

"Hockey people haven't changed and the intensity remains just as high now as it was back then," said Stitt.

Hockey traditions run deep in this part of the north country.

It doesn't matter whether you're at Appleton Arena or across town at Clarkson's Cheel Arena.

Whenever the two archrivals hit the ice together, you can bet the crowd will be in a frenzy with the playoffs.

"It's loud. It's crazy. There's a lot of stuff going on in the stands," said Clarkson Cheel Arena Director Scott Smalling.

While past players are remembered with pictures, hockey jerseys or trophies at both arenas, hockey fever is also big business as fans swarm to buy a variety of merchandise to show their team spirit.

"We definitely see a spike in our sales," said Philip Exley, who works at Clarkson Kiosk.

Regardless of who wins the best of three series between St. Lawrence and Clarkson, it's the fans who will be filling the seats that are the real winners.
